puppet; marionette; tool; robot. KUGUTSU is reading as an obsolete word. Modern reading for the same characters is KAI()RAI(). sing; song; especially, No song / recitation. In my guess, (Kugutsu-uta) is the word stands for some categoly or type of the song, originally sung in background of Japanese traditional puppet show.
